

The next item too, was a composition of Sri. Although Uma was faultless in conveying the clear lines of demarcation among the eight principal types of heroines, the song was unfortunately not too clear, with certain phrases sounding harried and fitted-to-tune, without much literary value, a lá a dubbed film-song. The beautiful soundscape and choreography of Dr. Starting with the Ganesha Pancharatnam, the dancer then moved-on to ‘Pashyati dishi dishi’, the beautiful Ashtapadi which delineates Radha searching in every direction for her beloved Krishna, after having bedecked herself in all finery, eagerly awaiting his arrival. The dancer performed to recorded music and had herself choreographed all the items performed that afternoon, barring the second item, the Ashtapadi. As Kalidasa said in his famed Malavikaagnimitram, the recital strived to prove that: “Naatyam bhinna-rucher-janasya apy-ekam samaaraadhanam” (Dance is THE universal source of rejoicement for people, despite their varied tastes), incorporating even a Tamil number into the repertoire that is predominantly comprised of Telugu and Sanskrit.
